Department of Mental Health (DMH) Home-Based Services
The BSCS Intensive Home-Based Therapeutic Care (IHBTC) program is an intensive and individualized service offered to youth and families supported by the Department of Mental Health (DMH). The core team includes a Master’s level Clinician and an Outreach Worker. Depending on your family’s needs, additional supports may include Occupational Therapy, Young Adult Peer Mentorship, Family Partner Services, and Psychiatry Consultation.
The young people identified for IHBTC services are those who are experiencing serious behavioral or mental health challenges and have had multiple out-of-home placements. Families participate in intensive community-based services with the goal of the youth remaining in or returning to live with the family and within their community. The array of services available include:
- Intensive family-based treatment in conjunction with episodes of out-of-home care for those youth
- Youth mentoring
- Care coordination
- Crisis support
- Parent/caregiver education and support
- Linkages with formal and informal community resources and supports
Services vary in intensity based upon the needs of each youth and family and are based upon the identified needs that support success in community settings, including home, school, recreation, community service, and work. This service is family-driven, youth guided, and strength-based.

The Flexible Support Services program assists families and youth in developing the skills and supports that promote family cohesion and successful community living. This service strengthens the family by successfully engaging the youth and family in focused interventions and therapeutic behavioral supports that enhance youth and family’s communication, problem solving, conflict resolution, and limit setting skills; increase effective patterns of family interactions; and assists the family to develop natural supports and identify and access community resources. This support is offered through working with clinicians, therapeutic support specialists and family partners. Clinicians on the team provide a 24/7 on-call crisis support to all families enrolled in the program. Referrals are made through DMH.

The Mentor Adolescent Action Team (MAAT) Group is a social skills group consisting of an average of six youths and two facilitators. BSCS offers two groups, latency age and an adolescent age, with appropriate curriculum levels. The groups utilize best practice approaches to address how behavioral health needs impact social success. Dialectical Behavioral Treatment (DBT) skills are taught and practiced in each phase. The groups focus on skills related to wellness, life skills, relationships, and problem solving. There is a recreational trip in the community every sixth week. The recreational trip is an opportunity for youths to practice the skills they have learned in the community. The recreational trips may include sports activities, museums, dinner out, bowling, or other activities that the youths suggest. Referrals are made through the Department of Mental Health (DMH).
